Lauren Wilhelm, mostly a self-taught artist, draws continual inspiration from history, classical portraiture, and the world around her. Deeply interested by the overlooked narratives of everyday life, she often juxtaposes classical imagery with contemporary suburban elements, creating works that feel both timeless and familiar.

Wilhelm’s works are instantly recognisable through her unique characters and their iconic, pensive gazes imbued with a sense of wonder. Reflecting her deep affinity with animals, horses and birds frequently appear alongside her subjects — sometimes as symbols of strength, other times offering solace and companionship.

The repeated juxtaposition of the old and new perfectly encapsulates a feeling: Nostalgia. Through each work, Wilhelm seeks to evoke personal memories and emotions unique to each viewer — intimate experiences deeply rooted in sentiment and recollection.

"I’ve always loved both classical and modern art and maybe I’m trying to blend them in my own style – melancholism. I am a very nostalgic person and perhaps as this feeling is hard to communicate with words, I’m endeavouring to capture the feeling in paint." -- Lauren Wilhelm

With more than 22 mostly sold-out solo exhibitions to date, Wilhelm’s works are held in numerous private collections across Australia and have been exhibited internationally in Italy, Spain, New York, and soon, for the first time, in Singapore.
