Philipp Meier, b.1976
New Zealand
Sculptor Philipp Meier grew up between Germany and New Zealand. Initial studies in architecture highlighted his need for the immediacy and hands-on involvement of the workshop and studio environment. Interested in the dialogue between skilled engineering and quality material, he completed a BA in Visual Art at EIT, along with an apprenticeship in Germany to a master builder and a number of industrial certificates. These are the building blocks for his analytical, precise practice as he explores the polarities between craftsmanship and experimentation.
Meier’s work seeks an authenticity of form and structure. Fascinated by the integrity and perfection of the natural world and its mechanisms, he pushes material limitations; seemingly simple lines are expertly manipulated and executed. His predominant use of stainless steel and corten belies the humanity and sensitivity which his sculpture exudes. As a result, his work offers surprising and often humorous observations of the fragility of our surrounding landscape and its inhabitants.
He has worked extensively with councils around New Zealand on public art projects and sculptural playgrounds, collaborating regularly with landscape architects and other artists. Participating in exhibitions both here and overseas, Meier is represented by Red Sea Gallery (Margaret River and Singapore). He lives with his young family in Napier.
