British artist Nick Veasey is a man who sees the world in X-ray vision.

"We live in a world obsessed with image. What we look like, what our clothes look like,  houses, cars… I like to counter this obsession with superficial appearance by using X-rays to strip back the layers and show what it is like under the surface."

Veasey, who worked in the advertising and design industries for almost a decade, first used X-ray as a photographic medium while working with conventional photography. It soon became apparent he had found his calling. His unique, interesting and often humorous works have been featured in international advertising campaigns and on product packaging, as well as winning a number of photography and design accolades.

    Nick Veasey

Nick Veasey has carved a unique niche in the art world by using X-ray imaging to explore the inner workings of everyday objects. His art transcends traditional photography, offering a glimpse into the often overlooked intricacies of the world around us. Veasey's dedication to his craft involves a meticulous and, at times, risky process, which results in pieces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply thought-provoking.

    Specialised X-ray chamber

Creating X-ray art is a complex and hazardous endeavour, the process demands a blend of scientific knowledge and technical skill. Veasey works in a specially constructed facility designed to safely handle the powerful radiation required. Objects to be X-rayed are placed on a lead floor or wall and film is placed under or behind the subject. The x-rays that emanate from the head units pass through the subject and make an image on the film.

The film is processed and then scanned on a high resolution scanner to obtain optimum detail and sharpness. The resulting images are then digitally composed and enhanced to highlight the intricate patterns and structures that are invisible to the naked eye.

Large and complex object can take months to complete and can be composed from hundreds of separate X-rays as each piece involves hours of careful preparation.

Veasey favours the Diasec method, which creates the artworks to appear to be floating off the wall in a modern, frameless style. It gives the X-ray itself the greatest possible impact and detail, as museum quality archival chromogenic prints are pressed between di-bond on the back and polished Perspex on the face.

Many people think his artworks are back-lit, but it is the contrast between the high-quality gloss, deep black background and detailed X-ray that makes the works ‘pop’.
