    Steven Page is a British sculptor living and working in rural Wales.

     
    Known for his compelling animal sculptures, Page's work explores the elegance and strength of the creatures that roam our planet. His signature approach fuses the time-honoured 'lost wax' technique with a contemporary mastery of patina, resulting in visually striking sculptures.

     

    "My work has been about perfecting animal forms and trying to create in each piece a 'universal form'."

     

    Page is inspired by the ancient philosopher Plato's 'Theory of Forms', which suggest that there are ideal, perfect versions of everything in the world. These perfect forms also exist in a separate realm of reality that exist beyond our physical world, Page strives towards this perfect ideal or 'universal form' in his work.

    There is a stillness and solidity to Page's sculptures which employ subtle curves, rounded edges and sweeping lines to create a gentle movement and grace.
     
    The sculptures aim to capture the essence of the creature; excess information is stripped away and the shapes are honed down and simplified creating a pure smooth skin in order to observe the form with the utmost clarity. This simplicity gives the work a timelessness and permanence.

    Lost wax casting is an ancient technique that dates back 6000 years ago. The process brings works of art in bronze to life through a series of moulding, casting, refining and for Page eventually 'patination' which is the adding of colour.
     
    Lost wax casting requires the experience and understanding of alchemy and also artisan techniques. The many different stages of the process make it extremely difficult to master.

  • Inspiration from Paleontology

  • Page's work draws inspiration from a variety of sources such as cave art and museum artefacts, as well as more contemporary references.

    The aim is to show the ancient heritage of these animals and our historic relationship with them whilst also creating something that looks at home in our modern world.

  • Page has exhibited extensively throughout the UK in both galleries and art fairs. His works are in private collections in the UK, Europe, USA and now in Singapore.
