Lauren Wilhelm is fascinated with everyday history; the lives that have gone before us and been forgotten, often juxtaposing classically-themed images with suburban elements. Her work is a comment on transience and an examination of the human condition – the ephemeral nature of life and our preoccupation with the minutia of everyday living, ignoring our own expiry and the damage to the environment around us.
With more than 22 solo exhibitions to date, Lauren Wilhelm has works in many private collections in Australia and has exhibited in Italy, Spain and New York. She is fascinated with everyday history; the lives that have gone before us and been forgotten, often juxtaposing classically-themed images with suburban elements.
“My paintings are a meditation on transience and the human condition; an exploration of life’s fleeting beauty, our preoccupation with everyday details, and the often unnoticed impermanence that shadows our existence.
I am fascinated by everyday history—those untold stories and forgotten lives that linger beneath the surface. With deliberate reference to classical portraiture – the steely gaze of the aristocrat – I contrast notions of prestige and invincibility with the contemporary symbols of power, like land developers or modern elites, to reveal that status and beauty offer no defence against time’s passage.
Animals also permeate my work: they are both companions and mythic avatars. From the poised horse to smaller creatures, they embody power, fragility, myth, and the blurred boundary between the natural and the constructed world.”
